GAF Warranty: Essential Things You Need to Know

Founded in 1886, GAF is currently one of the biggest roofing manufacturers in the U.S. With a GAF roofing system, you have a wide range of options that will accentuate your home’s beauty and keep it protected against harsh elements. Moreover, GAF-certified roofing contractors will handle every aspect of your project for you, from start to finish. It’s easier to manage your budget, timelines and materials when all products come from just one company.

GAF has everything you’ll ever need for your residential roofing project, from shingles and roof deck protection to attic vents and solar panels. What’s more, is that these products are protected by comprehensive warranties. Here’s what you need to know about GAF warranties.

Do You Need to Register Your GAF Warranty?

You don’t need to register both the GAF Shingle & Accessory Limited Warranty and the GAF Roofing System Limited Warranty. Just keep your proof of purchase, such as your invoice from a roofing supply store or contract with your installer. You’ll have to present this document in case the GAF products you purchased experiences problem during the warranty’s validity period.

On the other hand, enhanced warranties, such as the System Plus Limited Warranty, Silver Pledge™ Limited Warranty and Golden Pledge® Limited Warranty require registration. However, your certified GAF roofing contractor should be the one to register them. In case you purchased an enhanced warranty from a certified contractor and haven’t received a copy of your warranty and registration 60 days after the installation, contact GAF.

Types of GAF Warranty

GAF Roofing System Limited Warranty

All GAF Roofing Systems or GAF Lifetime shingles including at least three qualifying accessories are automatically eligible for GAF Roofing System Limited Warranty. This provides the same coverage as the GAF Shingle & Accessory Limited Warranty, but has additional lifetime coverage on qualifying accessories. You may also be eligible for the WindProven™ Limited Wind Warranty, depending on the products you purchased.

System Plus Limited Warranty

Carrying the same coverage as the GAF Roofing System Limited Warranty, the System Plus Limited Warranty features a 50-year Smart Choice Protection Period. Tear-off is also included in this warranty if necessary.

Silver Pledge Limited Warranty

The Silver Pledge Limited Warranty has the same inclusions as the System Plus Limited Warranty but it offers 10 more years coverage for workmanship and disposal.

Golden Pledge® Limited Warranty

The Golden Pledge possesses the same coverage included in the Silver Pledge Limited Warranty. However, its workmanship coverage extends to 20, 25 or 30 years, depending on which shingles you chose.

What Is the Lifetime Limited Warranty?

“Lifetime” pertains to the duration period of the coverage provided by your GAF warranty. It also means that the warranty stays valid as long as the original owner owns the house where the shingles were installed. However, it can be transferred to the second owner during the Smart Choice® Protection Period.

The lifetime limited warranty only applies to shingles and accessories installed on a single-family detached residence, owned by individuals. Meanwhile, the duration of the warranty is 40 years for other types of buildings, such as condominiums or homeowner’s associations, schools, apartment buildings, office buildings, etc.

What Does Smart Choice® Protection Period Mean?

Smart Choice Period is the critical time after the installation of GAF products while the coverage of your GAF warranty is non-prorated. One this period is over, the solutions given for your GAF warranty may be different than what’s provided during the Smart Choice Protection Period. The remedy will be reduced to reflect what you’ve received from the GAF products. To determine the amount of use, divide the number of months following the installation to the date of the claim by the number of months in the warranty term.

Dealing With Defective GAF Products

When GAF approves a claim you filed for manufacturing defects during the Smart Choice Protection Period, you will be given replacement GAF products. GAF will also cover full labor costs to install these products. If the Smart Choice Protection Period is over, labor is not covered anymore, and the amount of replacement GAF products will be reduced to reflect the use you’ve gotten from the products from the installation date to the date of claim.

Workmanship Coverage

The Golden Pledge Limited Warranty and Silver Pledge Limited Warranty provide coverage for improper installation of GAF products and flashings at valleys, dormers, chimneys and plumbing vents. You can only get this workmanship coverage from GAF Master Elite® roofing contractors.

In case GAF deems there’s an application error on the parts covered by the Golden Pledge or Silver Pledge Limited Warranty, the company will have your roof repaired, provide you with replacement products and give reimbursement for the full cost of labor and necessary materials to repair your roof. This includes covered flashings.

Wind Damage Coverage

All GAF warranties covering shingles and accessories come with a wind warranty. This warranty lasts for 15 years on GAF shingles and ridge cap shingles. Meanwhile, other GAF accessory products have no wind warranty coverage. The maximum wind speed coverage depends on the kind of shingles or ridge cap shingles on your roof and their installation method. When filing a claim, the typical outcome is reimbursement for the reasonable costs of replacing and hand-sealing affected shingles.

Moreover, GAF was first to offer the WindProven Limited Wind Warranty. This industry-first comes with a 15-year limited wind warranty with no maximum wind speed limitation. You must install GAF LayerLock™-labeled shingles and at least four qualifying GAF accessory products to qualify for this warranty. The qualifying accessories include GAF Ridge Cap Shingles, GAF Starter Strip Shingles and a GAF Roof Deck Protection, and your choice of either a GAF Leak Barrier or GAF Attic Ventilation Product.
