The Primary Functions of the Fascia Board

Your roof is composed of several components that work together to protect your home from inclement weather and the harsh elements. Among the most important but often overlooked is the fascia board. Here’s everything you need to know about this essential piece of your roofing system.

About the Fascia Board

The word “fascia” is Latin in origin, referring to a band or strip of material. In the context of architecture, a fascia board is a band or strip of material that runs horizontally along the roofline and covers the exposed ends of the roof’s trusses or rafters. One of the reasons why the fascia boards aren’t always obvious to many homeowners is because they are hidden from view by the gutter system.

The fascia board or trim is often installed alongside the soffit. It is another roofing component found on the underside of the eaves and runs from the topmost part of the exterior walls to the outer edges of the roof.

More Than Just Aesthetic Appeal

Even after gutter installation, the fascia board still lends itself to the roofing system’s entire aesthetic. It creates a smooth, uniform appearance along the roof’s edge. With the right color, it can match well with the rest of your home’s exterior components, including the asphalt shingles, siding, windows and doors.

But there’s more to a fascia board than contributing to your home’s curb appeal. It might look like a decorative item on your roof, but it helps secure the gutters to the roof and keep them in place. It protects your roof deck, attic and your home’s interior from moisture, particularly from wind-driven rain. By covering the open or rough ends of the rafters, no insects, birds, squirrels or other animals can enter and use the inside of your roof as their breeding grounds.

The fascia, however, is susceptible to rotting and weather damage because of its location. Fortunately, the storm damage restoration experts at AQ Roofing LLC can help you determine whether repairs can be made or a fascia replacement is necessary.
