Here’s What You Should Do When You Have Storm-Damaged Siding

When your home’s siding suffers damage following a storm, you shouldn’t think twice about getting repairs done as soon as possible, especially if you have homeowner’s insurance. Otherwise, your insurance claim won’t be accepted if the damage wasn’t addressed promptly. Here are the steps you need to take.

Review Your Insurance Policy

Typically, most policies will only cover the repair costs for siding on each side of a home that was damaged, but this can be different depending on which type of policy you have. To gain a better understanding of what you’re covered for in terms of exterior damage, it helps to review your homeowner’s insurance policy. The insurance providers will determine the scope of the work and cost of your damaged siding, so you’ll need to ensure the policy covers most (if not all) of the repair or replacement costs for your damaged siding.

Inspect Your Siding for Damage

As soon as the weather clears, you’ll need to walk around your home to check the extent of the damage. Hail damage is mostly recognizable by the dents and holes it makes on the surface, but your siding can also be damaged due to debris carried by strong winds during stormy weather. Most of these forms of damage are easy to spot, so be sure to take a lot of pictures on a day that’s not too bright (i.e. late afternoon or early evening). This will come in handy later when you call in a trusted siding contractor for a more thorough inspection.

Have a Professional Provide an Estimate

Your insurance provider will likely assign a representative to check your home for damage, but just in case the adjuster gives a lower estimate than expected, have it also inspected by your local contractors. Their estimate will be more impartial and accurate, plus it’s better to compare at least two estimates on the same project. It will also be likely that they’ll have similar estimates as both contractors and insurance providers would typically use the same software to determine the overall cost of the siding repair or replacement.
